Bush spirit to launch Cowboys

HE'S the boy from the bush and he's coming back to Townsville. Country music fans rejoice, Lee is coming to kick off the Cowboys season next month.

Cowboys management has confirmed the much-love Aussie musician will make what's sure to be a hit appearance at the 2008 Cowboys Season Launch on March 9.

It's not the only hit Lee's had, with his most recent album Spirit of the Bush dominating the country music charts.

Cowboys CEO Peter Parr said Lee had a `special affinity' with the Cowboys. Parr said the country music star had jumped at the chance to come to Townsville to wish the team well for the season.

"[He] is truly an Australian to make us all proud," Parr said, quoting Prime Minister Kevin Rudd when he announced Lee as the 2008 Australian of the Year.

"He loves the Cowboys [and] is by far the most popular entertainer to perform at our game days."

Lee wrote the club's anthem Come on the Cowboys, the Blue and Grey.

Parr said LK would perform the anthem and several other songs at the free season launch.

Cowboys players Ty Williams and Luke O'Donnell were at the announcement of Kernaghan's appearance.

While Williams and O'Donnell aren't country music fans, the sportsmen said they would be pleased to meet the Australian of the Year.

"We always get a good crowd (at the season launch)," Williams said.

"Though I don't know how they are going to react about the Muzza thing."

There has been a flood of rage from fans since it was announced last week Cowboys coach Graham Murray's contract would not be renewed next year.

The launch will be held at Strand Park on March 9 from 3pm.
