LK and the Olympic Spirit
24-04-08
Lee has done his bit for the Olympic spirit today.
Before the torch began its Australian journey Lee and his wife Robyn welcomed the symbol of the Olympic spirit by singing the national anthem.
“I was asked to carry the torch back in January,” Lee said.
“I committed to that and didn’t want to let anyone down but it has become very political now. For me, I totally respect people’s right to protest and when it comes to human rights there’s probably no higher cause to support but for me, the torch relay is all about supporting our Australian Olympic team.”
Lee said the athletes going to the Olympics had dedicated their lives to these games and if they missed them then they missed their lifetime opportunity to represent their country.
“I want to support them by running with the torch and run in support of the Olympic spirit,” he said.
“For generations now it has brought countries and people together so I want to run in support of that. I totally respect people’s right to demonstrate. When I say I’ll do something I will follow through with it. It is a great honour to be chosen.”
Lee was among around 88 runners that carried the torch through Canberra with little disruption.
